Kari Muhli, 61, is a seasoned professional who has had a versatile career as an industrial painter and a master car painter. An unemployment fund member since 1987, Muhli has accumulated experience over an extended period of time.
In 1987, Kari joined an unemployment fund on an acquaintance’s recommendation. The decision turned out to be invaluable. “Someone I knew suggested that I should join a trade union and a fund at the same time. I knew that it would provide security in case of unemployment. I was relieved to know that I would get unemployment benefits if I become unemployed,” Kari reminisces. Unemployment fund membership was his safety net in times of career breaks and lay-offs.
Without fund membership I would’ve been in trouble.
After enjoying a long career, Kari was hit with unemployment and attempted to find something new. However, switching careers turned out to be quite the challenge as his age brought on certain limitations. “My age became a factor and finding a new job was not easy,” he says. Kari is currently on early retirement pension but remains thankful for the support the unemployment fund has given him in the more difficult times.
“I would absolutely recommend joining an unemployment fund. It has been very helpful,” Kari says. He also encourages young people at the beginning of their careers to prepare for the future and look after their unemployment security.
Kari Muhli’s story is a great example of how unemployment fund membership provides important support and security for the uncertainties of working life. Funds will have an even greater role in the future as they are able to offer their members employment services, such as support in finding a new job. This development pleases Kari who, when unemployed, took advantage of the various courses which provided valuable new skills and something meaningful to do every day.
