The Finnish Financial Supervisory Authority has approved and confirmed the merger of the Finnish Food Workers’ Unemployment Fund into Open Unemployment Fund A-kassa at the start of next year. The merger will take effect on 1 January 2024.
At their fund meetings in May 2023, the Finnish Food Workers’ Unemployment Fund and Open Unemployment Fund A-kassa approved an agreement on the merger of the Finnish Food Workers’ Unemployment Fund into Open Unemployment Fund A-kassa on 1 January 2024. Official announcements of the merger were published on the websites of the Finnish Food Workers’ Unemployment Fund, Open Unemployment Fund A-kassa, and the Finnish Financial Supervisory Authority on 9 June 2023. An announcement also appeared in the Elintae magazine published on 9 June 2023, and letters were also sent to the unemployment fund’s individual members to notify them of the matter.
With more than 228,000 members, A-kassa is Finland’s third-largest unemployment fund. The merger will transfer 17,220 members to A-kassa. The Finnish Food Workers’ Unemployment Fund’s members do not need to take any action due to the fund merger at this stage. Their memberships will be converted into A-kassa memberships automatically at the start of next year. If any action is necessary, it will be announced well before the end of the year. Furthermore, the merger will not affect A-kassa’s existing members.
A-kassa is a general, multi-sectoral unemployment fund open to all wage and salary earners. A-kassa handles the payment of its members’ earnings-related unemployment benefits.
